Factory profits rise: Profits of U.S. manufacturing companies rose strongly at the beginning of 1996 after a weak finish in the closing quarter of 1995, the Commerce Department said. A quarterly survey of about 7,900 companies showed that profits rose to a seasonally adjusted 5.8 cents per dollar of sales from a revised 5.0 cents in the fourth quarter last year.
