USX-U.S. Steel Group, the nation’s largest steel producer, said it faces a proposed $11,500 fine for alleged safety violations at its Gary mill. An Indiana safety agency has alleged that the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker failed to keep the Gary plant, its largest mill, “free from recognized hazards” and neglected to review emergency evacuation plans with workers. A fire at a plant blast furnace on April 2 disrupted production and injured three workers.
