With a resurgence of interest in the rollicking, horn-leavened jump blues sound that swept the West Coast during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the return to prominence of Los Angeles R&B pioneer Floyd Dixon is an exercise in perfect timing. Unlike some of the bland revivalists now exploiting the genre, Dixon helped to develop the idiom, and his supple piano style and infectious vocals render this set irresistible. Dixon is a master of gospel-tinged slow blues as well; his two-fisted 88s power the immaculate after-hours efforts “My Song Is Don’t Worry” and “Mean and Jealous Man.”
