Elections to restore a local government to Kashmir will be held in September — the first vote for a state legislature since a separatist rebellion began six years ago.
The vote will be held over four days so Indian police and military can concentrate troops at polling stations in the violence-racked state, election commissioner T.N. Seshan said in New Delhi.
He said the exact dates of the vote will be announced later.
Since 1990, Jammu-Kashmir state has been ruled by the federal government through an appointed governor. It is the only Muslim-majority state in predominantly Hindu India. Dozens of militant groups, claiming discrimination by India, have been fighting since 1989 for the region to become independent or join Pakistan.
