WANT TO GET AHEAD? LEAVE EARLY

The person who comes in early and stays late is the office star, right?

Wrong. In fact, workaholics may be a detriment to a workplace.

“They tend not to be team players,” Bryan Robinson, Ph.D., tells First magazine.

“People who are totally work-oriented tend to have a narrow perspective,” adds Rhoda Frindell Green Ph.D.

The reason: Workaholics are goal-oriented, rather than process-oriented, and may approach projects with impatience and impulsiveness that results in mistakes.

The solution: A balanced approach. “People who are out experiencing life — taking cooking classes, entertaining friends — are better at jobs requiring creative thinking,” Green says.
