In response to Raymond Curran’s letter titled “Get at the roots of crime early” (Voice, July 30), I would amend one statement to read: “Courses in parenting should be mandated.” Period. Why wait until a child is caught in a crime to insist that the parents attend such courses?

As a society we still believe the myth that parenting skills are intuitive. The cost of this delusion is incalculable. Some courses are mandated at the high school level, but not education for parenting, which would be the most beneficial not only to parents and children but to society as a whole.
