The final week of the ’96 Games was a dizzying mix of tears, fears, jeers and cheers. First, there was the bomb (for more info on that, see Page 3). Visitors and athletes were angry and afraid – but everyone was determined that the Games go on. And we’re so glad they did! Look at what we saw:
U.S. wrestler Kurt Angle showed that big boys do cry. After he won gold the tears flowed!
Britain’s Linford Christie refused to leave the track after a machine detected that he false-started twice in the 100-meter dash. No way, he said. Sore loser, his rivals said.
Everyone started squabbling over whether Carl Lewis should be able to run in the 4-x-100-meter relay so he could win a 10th gold. (But he never went to practices…)
Dominique Moceanu bonked her head on the beam. Rest, girl!
The Dream team won gold. Yeah, we know… duh!
