This week’s guest professional is Danny Mulhearn of Cantigny Golf Club, site of this week’s Illinois State Amateur. The topic: practice in the fall and winter.

Question–As the golf season winds down in the fall, it seems too late to start reshaping one’s swing. What are some good things to work on in the fall and winter?

Answer–The only thing you should worry about in the fall is balance. When you wear a lot of clothes, your swing is probably restricted. Falling off balance is the biggest problem you encounter. Think about staying in balance and a good finish position. That and your short game will make up for the lack of distance. In the winter there is not a lot you can do. Conditioning exercises and putting indoors are about it. Hitting balls into a net–all that helps is timing. You may do more harm than good by trying to work on the full swing indoors.

Q–What is your opinion of electronic swing trainers and heated outdoor driving ranges?

A–When you’re working on the golf swing, the best thing is if you can see the flight of the ball. I don’t agree with a lot of swing trainers because all they tell you is what the club is doing. They don’t tell you why it’s doing it. The domed indoor facilities in Aurora and Bensenville are great because you can see where the ball is going. Heated outdoor ranges are great for the same reason.

Q–What about taking a lesson on a winter vacation to a warmer climate?

A–I think taking a lesson before you go is a good idea. Having one thing to work on gives you something to focus on while playing golf on vacation.
