In a classic example of “Do as I say, not as I do,” the Illinois Environ-mental Protection Agency has been running radio spots promoting mass transit as a means of reducing pollution. The ads say Chicago is “one of the worst areas in the country” for air quality.

But if public transportation is so vital to the environment, why has the EPA located its regional office in Maywood, a western suburb that is mainly accessible only by automobile? Such a strange paradox means each employee of the state’s so-called anti-pollution agency is personally contributing to our air pollution. No wonder Chicago has a serious problem.
