The Detroit Lions, who have played in the Pontiac Silverdome since 1975, intend to leave the suburbs and return to Detroit in a new downtown football stadium.
The $225-million stadium will be built adjacent to a planned Tigers ballpark in Foxtown, a neighborhood of dilapidated buildings and vacant lots.
The Lions said they will not break their Silverdome lease, which runs through 2004, but said a buyout may be explored.
Tigers owner Mike Ilitch announced last fall that his team would build a $240-million stadium–expected to be done by April 1998–next to what is now the proposed Lions stadium site. “This is for the next generation,” said Ilitch, a downtown booster.
