The rest of the year, Tim O’Brien of Edina, Minn., is a no-nonsense trial lawyer. But during his week in Chicago, O’Brien the delegate became a mover and shaker of a different sort.

Like thousands of other Democrats who turned the convention floor into a dance floor, O’Brien learned, then tried his hand–and hips–at the macarena.

His verdict? “I think it’s great,” O’Brien said. “We’ve been doing it at the convention for the last three days. It’s a lot of fun, a nice break.”

The Latin line dance has no demanding steps and just a few simple arm movements.

Vice President Al Gore’s stiff-as-a-corpse rendition Wednesday night showed America just how far macarena madness has swept the convention.

As for the Republican response, so far it’s all talk and no dance-floor action. Bob Dole has been known to brave the polka at the odd campaign stop, but that’s about it.
