On Nov. 5, Florida voters made history by passing the polluter-pay amendment to the state constitution by a 68-32 majority. The amendment passed despite the sugar industry’s $30 million campaign that defeated a related fee amendment meant to fund Everglades restoration.

This law will require polluters to pay for their environmental rapacity and could have far broader long-term ramifications than the fee amendment. It is hoped that it could also be a model for similar laws in other states.
