The Wauconda Police Department has decided to try to sell a pair of AR-15 Colt rifles to another law enforcement agency after two village trustees objected to plans to sell the semiautomatic weapons to private collectors.
In trying to sell the AR-15s, the department found it could get $950 apiece by selling them privately, but only $587 apiece by trading them in to a police supply company.
The rifles were to be sold to two law enforcement officers, who are collectors. Under federal law, only sworn officers are allowed to own an AR-15.
At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Village Board agreed to delay the sale while the police department looks for another law enforcement agency that will pay at least $950 for the weapons.
