Cuban government minister has attended a Roman Catholic mass in an official role for the first time, a further sign of improving relations, Vatican Radio said Tuesday.

The radio said Culture Minister Armando Hart officially attended a mass in Havana Cathedral on Sunday to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

“It is the first time that a member of the Cuban government has taken part officially in a mass,” the radio reported.

“The gesture appears even more significant, ahead of Pope John Paul’s planned visit to Cuba in 1997,” it said.

The pontiff met Fidel Castro at the Vatican on Nov. 19 in a historic encounter.
