The Wolves shed their sheep’s clothing Friday night in the Horizon and devoured the Kansas City Blades 6-2.

They bore only a faint resemblance to the lambs of winter who had lost eight of their previous 10 games.

Dan Currie opened the scoring at 5:56, connecting on a power-play rebound of a shot by defenseman Steve Gosselin.

At 13:51 Tim Bergland latched onto a loose puck and sent a shot from the right circle past Andre Raciot, the goaltender loaned to Kansas City by the Blackhawks in late December.

Shortly thereafter penalties against Gosselin for holding and fellow defenseman Brett Hauer for high-sticking gave Kansas City a two-man power-play advantage. The Blades capitalized and got their first goal at 17:15 when David Bruce took up residence at the right post and put in the rebound of a shot by John Purves.

At 6:34 of the second period the visitors tied the score on another goal from point-blank range. This time it was Jeff Madill, who connected after goalie Ray LeBlanc thwarted the first attempt by defenseman Jim Kyte.

But by the end of the middle period the Wolves were back on top by two goals, thanks to left wing Steve Maltais’ two goals. A spectacular pass from Rob Brown set up Maltais’ first goal.

The Wolves’ final two goals were scored in the third period by Brad Purdie and Darryl Lafrance.

Indy-bound: The reason the Hawks recalled center Kip Miller on Thursday was because he had worn out his welcome with the Wolves. The Hawks also weren’t impressed by Miller’s performance with the Wolves; they sent him to their Indianapolis farm team.
