A 84-year-old woman died and a 66-year-old woman was injured in a fire Wednesday night in a Skokie apartment building.

Lorene Speigel was found dead in her apartment in the two-story building at 4636 Davis St., said Skokie Deputy Fire Chief Peter Wilms.

Josephine Penn, who lived in an apartment next to Speigel’s, was listed in good condition at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie. She was being treated for smoke inhalation, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Wilms said firefighters responded about 6:45 p.m. to the blaze, which was confined to Speigel’s apartment. The cause was under investigation, he said.
