Concern over the future of the Kishwaukee river valley drew more than 50 people Thursday night to a forum sponsored by a chapter of the Sierra Club, a national environmental watchdog group.

The Kishwaukee River extends for 64 miles from McHenry County through Belvidere to the Rock River.

Environmentalists had called the meeting over concerns that Woodstock’s proposal to expand the city’s southern waste water treatment plant could adversely affect the river.

Steve Pescitelli of the Illinois Department of Conservation told the forum the Kishwaukee is rated a Class A river, one of the few in northern Illinois. “This (meeting) is important to protect the Kishwaukee so that it remains an A,” Pescitelli said.
