Village officials have announced that an investment of $19,000 to pay for a special census will probably produce a return of about $50,000 in additional tax revenues annually.

The board voted recently to look into determining how much the village has grown since the 1990 U.S. Census.

Green Oaks stands to gain about $63 a year for every resident new to the village since 1990, officials said at the Village Board’s Wednesday night meeting.

“We figure we have about 800 new residents,” said Elaine Palmer, village administrator. “We should be able to pay for this special census easily.”

The village was home to 2,101 residents in 1990, according to the census. A subsequent building boom has resulted in hundreds of new homes, making a substantial increase in population likely, village officials said.

The U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct the special census later this year.
