Free school bus service for children attending local parochial schools ended Thursday night as the board of the Gages Lake-based Woodland School District 50 voted to begin charging parents for the service in August.

Although the board did not establish a fee structure, it approved charging for rides that are now provided free to students at St. Gilbert’s School in Grayslake and St. Patrick’s School in Wadsworth. Supt. Dennis Conti said bus service also will be limited to 2 miles outside district boundaries.

District board members warned a group of parochial school parents last month that changes in the bus service, including possibly its elimination, had to be made so the district’s policy could withstand any court challenge, Conti said.
