With some help from a small army of volunteers and the cooperation of the Bureau of the Census, a special census to determine how much Green Oaks has grown since 1990 could be underway as soon as late August, village officials have announced.
A special census was proposed last year as a way to get a jump on the next U.S. census, which will be taken in the year 2000.
Significant new home construction since the 1990 census has led village officials to speculate that the official population of 2,101 may have grown by as much as 50 percent in the years since.
At stake is about $63 in new revenue for every resident new to the village since 1990, village officials said. The village will be seeking volunteers to assist with the head count.
