If all goes well with the approval process, Algonquin will be home to McHenry County’s first open-space community.

Pulte Homes plans to build a 184-acre subdivision on Square Barn Road south of Algonquin Road. The proposal calls for 242 single-family homes and 120 two-family club homes clustered around six lakes with walking and biking paths.

It calls for small lots and 93 acres of open space. The lots average 8,400 square feet instead of the 18,000 square feet called for in Algonquin’s comprehensive plan. But each lot will be surrounded by 10,000 square feet maintained by a homeowners association, according to company officials.

Pulte still needs to go before the Planning, Building and Zoning Commission and to get final approval from the Village Board.
