In your March 23 editorial, “Fun and guns in Springfield,” you say that the idea of permitting citizens to carry concealed weapons is nonsense. I disagree.
Our streets are crawling with violent criminals created by disgracefully asinine social policies and unpunished and undeterred by an insane and ineffectual criminal law system. At the same time, government has no duty to–and indeed cannot–protect its citizens against crime.
The right to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner was once one of countless individual rights naturally possessed by every American. As our once-great nation has slid ever deeper into collectivist quicksand, this right has deteriorated to the point that now we must fight even to be allowed to beg our rulers for permission to protect our own lives. The true nonsense is allowing this disgraceful situation to continue.
Illinoisans should begin to restore the right of the people to keep and bear arms. A concealed-carry law would be a step in the right direction.
