I am proud to be a resident of Bridgeport and an alumnus of De La Salle Institute.

Bridgeport and De La Salle have produced mayors of Chicago, presidents of the Cook County Board, clerks of the Circuit Court, a justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, state representatives and senators, a Cook County commissioner, Circuit Court judges, a U.S. secretary of commerce, aldermen, a first deputy superintendent of the Chicago Police Department and a federal judge, to name a few.

My grandparents, naturalized citizens, are honored to have three grandsons and two great-grandsons as De La Salle alumni.

As for the savage attack on Lenard Clark, it was unjustified, unlawful and unwarranted. May God in His infinite wisdom grant Lenard a complete and speedy recovery.

It appears, though, that the news media, in its rush to judgment, has convicted the three accused youths. Let us not forget that the accused are guaranteed a fair and speedy trial. In all criminal cases the defendants are innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Let us pray that this does not become a media circus like some other recent criminal cases.
