Amid all the carping and column writing surrounding March’s 32-to-18 City Council vote in favor of a proposal extending health benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian city employees, the word homophobia, a favorite of the p.c. crowd, was used-over and over and over again-to mean “irrational fear of gays.”
All but vanished from common usage is its other, more intriguing meaning, which refers to a pathological disorder: an obsession with homosexuality, caused by the heavily suppressed fear that one may be homosexual oneself.
