The Schaumburg Environ-mental/Aesthetics Committee is looking for residents with green thumbs.

The committee has been trying to get a gardening program off the ground and has been seeking candidates to take part in the University of Illinois project since last November.

To date, though, only four people have joined the Master Gardener Program.

“There has to be more than four people in a village of more than 70,000,” said Chairman Bob Karman. “There are people out there with the talent, it is just a matter of trying to get them to share it with others.”

The committee has been targeting senior citizens, but the program is open to anyone over 18, Karman said.

Those who volunteer will receive 60 hours of training in a variety of horticultural topics, such as soils, botany, entomology, pathology, house plants, landscaping, turf, vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants.

Karman said those people who go through the program will assist area residents with gardening questions and may eventually be a part of videos the committee hopes to create on gardening topics for use on cable television. He hopes to have a larger list of candidates by July 1 so that he can develop a proposal for the Village Board to review.

Karman said those wishing more information should contact the committee by calling 847-895-0007, ext. 297.
