I enthusiastically uphold Steven Larsen’s informative letter on phonics (Voice, March 29).

For years I have taught reading to children and adults, always using the phonetic method. It is exciting to watch these students unlock new words, using their phonetic background. I have also experienced the failure of other so-called successful methods. Not one of them can equal the phonetic approach to sustained progress in attaining reading skills.

Up with phonics!
