Harvard will offer again this year a program to replace sidewalks in which the resident picks up 50 percent of the cost.
The program was well-received last year because residents only paid for what they wanted repaired, said Ald. Scott Dikun, chairman of the city’s Streets and Alleys Committee.
“There were a lot people whose bills turned out to be $75,” Dikun said. “They were happy that we fixed only the two squares that were heaving and kept them from shoveling the snow.”
There were 17 residents who had sidewalks repaired in 1996, which is more than the city has done in the past, he added.
The city suspended the 50-50 program for several years due to lack of funds, but this year was able to budget $10,000, Dikun said.
Already, 14 residents have asked that their sidewalks be repaired this year. Anyone who wants to participate in the program should contact City Hall, Dikun said.
The work will be bid out in mid-August, with construction to take place in the late summer or early fall, said Harvard city administrator Dave Nelson.
