Should the speaker of the House receive a $300,000 loan on terms not available to ordinary citizens from a member of a prominent Washington law and lobbying firm whose clients–including tobacco companies–have interests before Congress?

Bob Dole said he will not lobby, but won’t the loan enhance the lobbying clout of other firm members?

Those who missed this opportunity to gain favor can always contribute $250,000 to an upcoming Republican fundraiser, entitling them to breakfast with Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and Speaker Newt Gingrich and to lunch and dinner with Republican leaders.

Or they can await the next such event benefiting the equal-opportunity Democrats.
