Earth Day is now behind us, but I would like to suggest that we take a look around our neighborhoods, parks, waterways, etc. and make a conscious effort to clean up our environment on a continuing basis.
One practical suggestion might be that each of us carry a trash-can liner for one day every other week and just pick up whatever trash we see–in our parks and forest preserves if we’re out hiking, on our waterways if we’re out canoeing, in the street if we’re on our way to work, etc. If enough people started doing this, we could probably make it once a month.
It would be a wonderful lesson to impart to our children. Tell them why we’re doing it, and perhaps some day we won’t have to carry trash-can liners because people will have learned not to litter and pollute to begin with.
