U.S. officials have decided to keep a 450-member military support mission in Haiti at least through July, a military spokesman said Tuesday, two days after the deadline for their departure.

The support group — soldiers from Ft. Bragg, N.C.; Coast Guard crew members, and Navy medics and engineers — trains military units in Haiti and provides medical care to UN personnel.

It also has built roads and renovated schools, provided training to the Haitian coast guard and assisted in drug interdiction.

Members of the mission are expected to remain at least until the end of the United Nations mission on July 31.
