The sign says “Bridge freezes before roadway.” Why? Because the temperature of the ground beneath a road is often higher than the air temperature. The roadway on a bridge or overpass, however, has no ground directly beneath it. Cold air circulates above and below the bridge, which can cause it to freeze before the roads.
