A 60-year-old jewel salesman making a call Wednesday afternoon in Wood Dale was robbed of diamonds and other jewels valued in excess of $400,000, police said Thursday.
The salesman was getting out of his car in an industrial neighborhood in the 800 block of Lively Boulevard at 4:30 p.m. when he was approached by four men, one of them implying he had a weapon, said Wood Dale Police Cmdr. Frank Biniewicz.
Biniewicz said one of the robbers took a briefcase containing the jewels and slashed a tire on the man’s car.
The salesman, a resident of the north suburbs, was not injured. He is helping detectives create composite pictures of the robbers, said Biniewicz.
“The men fled in a green sedan,” said Biniewicz. “We are planning to talk to several police departments about recent robberies of jewel salesmen in their communities.”
