Beginning Monday, it’s time for everyone new to Wheaton to stand up and be counted.

City officials figure that about 6,000 people have moved into the town since the 1990 census, when 51,464 residents were tallied.

Because of the estimated rise in population, city officials have decided to conduct a special census.

If the 6,000 increase is confirmed in the new head count, it will mean a jump of more than $400,000 a year in the city’s share of state income and motor fuel taxes and the $50,000 cost of the special census will be more than covered by the first-year increase in revenues.

Wheaton officials said the census takers will concentrate on developments new to the city since 1990, so residents in most areas of the town won’t need to answer the door for the census taker.
