Iranian forces have launched war games near the Afghanistan border, a major drug smuggling route, a Tehran newspaper said Wednesday.

The daily Kayhan said army forces using “advanced weapons” were staging the maneuvers near Torbat-e Jam, about 38 miles from the Afghan border. It did not say when the exercises began.

Iran has been building up its defenses along its eastern borders to stop drug smuggling, particularly since the Taliban militia gained control over Afghan areas across the border.

Shi’ite Islamic Iran has accused the militant Sunni Taliban of giving Islam a bad name and has refused to recognize the Taliban government.
