As expected, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange approved a plan to split its futures contract on the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index. By halving the contract’s multiplier from $500 to $250, the Merc hopes to attract more business. Big traders had opposed the move, which is subject to Commodity Futures Trading Commission approval, because it would raise their transaction costs.
