A fire gutted a downtown building Monday. One business was destroyed and two others were damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The fire in the building housing Davenport’s Office Supply is believed to have started against the north wall of the store. The cause was not yet known, said Fire Chief Larry Fally.

Cindi’s Candy and Crafts and Woodfall and Associates Engineering and Surveying Inc. were damaged by smoke and water.

The fire was the second major blaze in downtown Mt. Vernon in 16 months. Several businesses were severely damaged April 24, 1996.
