University of Minnesota basketball player Courtney James was found guilty Tuesday of one count of domestic assault but was cleared of a second similar charge.

A Hennepin County District Court jury found James, a 6-foot-8-inch forward from Indianapolis, guilty of intending to cause fear, but innocent of the other charge, which was intending to cause harm.

After the verdict, Melanie Olson, James’ ex-girlfriend, said she still loved James.

Olson testified Monday that on April 12 James slapped her across the face with a memo book and threw her across the room. She said James became angry when he heard a brief message on her answering machine from Shaquille O’Neal. She said James also was upset that she hadn’t cleared out the names of other men from her memo book.

Sentencing, expected to be community service or a fine, was set for Sept. 10.

Men’s Athletic Director Mark Dienhart said school’s internal investigation would continue and the verdict has no immediate effect on James’ suspension from the team.
