More than 100 students at Ball State University who made $17,500 in long-distance calls from campus telephones will have to cough up the money, school officials said Wednesday.
An internal inquiry found that students were using a special access code to make free long-distance calls.
Dean of Students Donald Mikesell said everyone who used the code for personal calls would be tracked down from billing records and required to reimburse the university.
“Approximately 30 people account for 90 percent of the charges,” Mikesell said.
Some of the students could also face disciplinary action, Mikesell said.
Ball State spokesman Jeffrey Alford said the school is making changes in its telephone policies and billing procedures to prevent the problem from recurring.
