The Gurnee School District 56 Board met in a special meeting Thursday night and awarded nearly $9 million in construction contracts.

The money will go toward the reconstruction of Viking Junior High School, 4460 W. Grand Ave., and the construction of four additional classrooms at Spaulding Elementary School, 3638 Florida Ave.

Though some board members were concerned that some of the bids were higher than expected–exceeding the budgeted amount by $187,000–the district’s project manager recommended approval.

Masonry work was awarded to Esche & Lee of Arlington Heights for the Viking project, and to Schaumburg-based Illinois Masonry for the Spaulding work, for a total cost of more than $2.7 million.

Jones & Brown of Addison received the $995,471 award for structural and miscellaneous steel work for both schools.
