A tentative budget for the 1997-98 school year sees Mokena Elementary School District 159 in the black, according to Assistant Supt. Pat Chesla.
The district’s proposed budget of more than $8 million should end up with a surplus of more than $33,000 by the end of the fiscal year, Chesla told the school board earlier this month.
Increased staff to keep up with enrollment and new programs, such as an Early Start class for at-risk preschoolers and foreign language classes for junior high school students all play a role in the budget, she said.
From the four operating funds, the budget projects expenditures of about $6.8 million from the education fund; about $1.2 million from the operations and maintenance fund; $466,333 from the transportation fund; and $231,014 from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.
The bulk of revenue for the operating funds, a total of about $5.8 million comes from local sources, Chesla said.
The solvency predicted for the school year is due to a state adequacy grant awarded this year to underfunded school districts.
The board is scheduled to take a final vote on the budget on Sept. 17.
