You earned a bachelor’s degree, maybe even went on for a master’s, read some Milton Friedman, voted for Ronald Reagan, got hired by some company that made you a “director” of this or a “manager” of that or, maybe, a something “analyst.”
Your employer then made you “exempt” from overtime pay because you were, after all, a “professional” worker. You believed in the rule of the marketplace and everything negative you were ever told about unions and, besides, you had that impressive-sounding title and three weeks’ vacation.
Your department was “downsized” in 1992, and your former associates are working retail and mailing resumes. Now, you work 12 hours a day, six days a week, and settle for 3 percent raises. Yet, you think the striking UPS drivers were stupid?
