Glendale Heights trustees Thursday night took the first steps toward reducing the utility tax and boosting the sales tax.
The 18 percent decline in the utility tax–from 4.85 to 4 percent–will take effect with September’s utility bills, said Bill Burger, the village’s finance director.
A public hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4, on a 25 percent hike–from 1 to 1.25 percent–in the sales tax. If approved, that increase would take effect Jan. 1.
The village could see an additional $725,000 in revenue next fiscal year as a result of the moves.
Trustees said they wanted to eliminate the utility tax as a way of making the tax burden more equitable. Higher sales taxes will shift the tax burden to more non-residents.
