A program that offers hope of preventing algae blooms in lakes is outpacing the funding provided by the legislature, officials say.
The Priority Watershed Program was created in 1979 to combat water pollution from “non-point” sources such as farms and city streets.
The program had spent $87 million for planning and cleanup grants through last year on large-scale projects. Another $7.4 million was spent on smaller special projects.
The budget awaiting legislative action would provide $28.8 million for the two years ending June 30, 1999. More than $35 million in needs have been identified.
