For the first time, Miss America contestants are allowed to wear two-piece bathing suits, but they may have a difficult time finding one that measures up to such stringent dimensions: The waistband must be no more than 1.5 inches under the navel; the back strap must be at least an inch wide; the shoulder strap must be at least a half-inch wide (“Newsmakers,” Aug. 17).
Have the judges been to America’s beaches? Thongs rule! The bottom line is you have to be fit to be tied in a string bikini. That should be the only criterion.
