If Jan Schakowsky’s direct-mail solicitations are any indication, the race to fill Rep. Sid Yates’ 9th District congressional seat is heating up. The primary is a mere seven months away.
Except for one term, Yates has represented his district since 1948. The race for his seat will be one of the most closely watched races in Illinois and could be recognized as a barometer for the direction American voters take in 1998. In the coming months, 9th District voters would do themselves a favor by taking long, hard looks at their choices in an effort to elect a candidate who truly responds to their needs.
In stark contrast to Rep. Yates’ tenure, I would like our next representative to give constituents assurances of: frequent visits home; availa-bility to meet in the district with constituents; a pledge to meet serious general election challengers in debates; and a presence in the district during general election campaigns.
A district’s congressman is the citizens’ closest contact with their federal government. Yates’ invisibility in his district shows his total lack of respect for this simple idea. Voters in the 9th District should demand more–much more–from his replacement.
