Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar denied Friday that he was drunk when he was arrested Thursday night and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by police in neighboring Naperville.
He said he was returning home from the DuPage County annual Republican Day golf outing at St. Andrew’s Golf Club, near West Chicago, when he was pulled over by police.
Claar, 51, said the golf outing had a Mardi Gras theme, and he had a number of strings of beads around his neck. He said his car swerved as he attempted to take the beads off while driving, and he was stopped by police.
The incident occurred at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, according to a Naperville police report, which said Claar’s vehicle was pulled over near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Naper Boulevard after an officer had followed it for several blocks and determined it was being driven erratically.
