John Schmidt says that if he winds up winning the 1998 Governor’s race as a Democrat, he will scrap any plans to spend state money on a new stadium for the Chicago Bears.
“There shouldn’t be a dollar of public money spent for the benefit of the Bears,” Schmidt said during the taping of WGN-AM radio’s “Dateline 720,” which airs Sunday at 10 p.m.
With the state already facing the challenges of funding schools and fighting crime, he said, “I don’t think (a new stadium) ought to be high on anybody’s agenda.”
