A recent story reported that enrollment in America’s schools is higher now than ever before (Main news, Aug. 22). This news underscores the crucial need for a system that guarantees Illinois teachers will be equipped to provide the kind of quality education necessary for our future work force.

Other states, already facing teacher shortages, are luring away our best teachers by offering higher salaries, better working environments and smaller classrooms.

With Gov. Jim Edgar’s imminent retirement, the General Assembly should put aside political squabbling about funding and work out a plan this fall that will ensure our students learn from the best teachers in the field.

Negotiating equitable school funding may take some time, but enacting laws that guarantee standards-based teacher preparation, certification and professional development, along with funding for capital improvements, are essential steps we should take today to ensure more employable workers tomorrow.

As a member of Chicago United, a diverse business leadership group, I join my colleagues in expecting legislative action on behalf of quality education for Illinois students this fall.
