It was reported that a new jail may be needed in Lake County to handle the anticipated overcrowding in the next year or two (Page 1, Aug. 26). If so, should the citizens of Lake County be alarmed? Is the sheriff predicting a crime wave sweeping our communities?
May I suggest that instead of planning to spend millions of tax dollars on a new jail, alternatives such as community policing and a therapeutic community approach to fighting crime, drugs and gangs be instituted?
Education and treatment are the keys toward giving people the opportunity to lead crime-free lives, and participation of concerned citizens in making streets safe will reduce the need for more jails.
