Schaumburg-based Motorola Inc., along with Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., will lead a consortium of U.S. semiconductor manufacturers to work with U.S. Energy Department scientists in creating next-generation computer chips. The partnership, Extreme Ultraviolet LLC, will invest more than $250 million in the research project to develop a laser-based light source that will allow chipmakers to produce chips 100 times as powerful as those in use today. One goal is to build ultraviolet light machines. The machines are likely to sell for about $20 million.
